Former Burundian Prime Minister pleaded for a life sentence.

On Thursday November 8,2023, in front of court, the public prosecutor pleaded for Alain Guillaume Bunyoni a life sentence after a four-day court hearing in Central prison of Gitega.

These requests came after the four-day court hearing in Central prison of Gitega which kicked off on Monday.

General Bunyoni pleaded to be whitened and freed stating that the public prosecutor failed to provide the tangible evidence over the charges.

Other six accused in the same case with Bunyoni pleaded for a 30-year term in prison.

They also requested to be whitened arguing that there is any tangible proof presented by the public prosecutor over the charges.

The latest developments at the end of the court hearing.

At the beginning of the detailed court hearing, Gen.Bunyoni had been accused of nine charges. But on Friday after defending the seven charges against him, the court ruled Bunyoni has concluded to defend over the charges and the court hearing would end on Thursday.

The charges

Messing up the country’s security, Hampering the national economy, Defaming the reputation of the head of state as well as the Prime Minister,Attempts to elimination of the head of state with intention to take over the constitutional regime, Illegal possession of weapons, Attempts to self- enrichment illegally, and using evil spirits attempting to kill the head of state and taking over the constitutional regime.

With those crimes, the public prosecutor pleaded for Alain Guillaume Bunyoni the life sentence.

Bunyoni should get fined

Apart from the judicial punishment, the public prosecutor requested the court that Alain Guillaume Bunyoni would get fined up to 7.100.000 FB.

Moreover, the public prosecutor added that Bunyoni would pay double the value of his 153 pieces of land and 43 vehicles.

General Bunyoni requested to be whitened, stressing on the public prosecutor’s failure to provide any evidence over the charges in front of the court.

For example, Bunyoni stated that the public prosecutor failed in front of justice to name the person presumably to have been given money by Bunyoni seeking to kill the head of state as the public prosecutor acknowledges he retains the whole identity of the presumed and his whereabouts.

Bunyoni added that nobody can plot against the head of state and reverse the government officials collaborating with drivers, junior police agents and the chief of the quarter only.

Over the charge related to keeping money at home, he said that he’s innocent since there is no law against it.

The illegal weapons he is accused of to keep, Bunyoni evoked that the police officer’s remarks confirm that they[weapons] had been posed by them.

Destin Bapfumukeko, the former Intelligence service agent and Desire Uwamahoro, the high police officer, both reminded that the public prosecutor failed to provide any tangible evidence over the charges related to the disclosing of work’s secrets and the attempts to kill the head of the state.

The two drivers, an engineer and the chief of the quarter, both indicated there is any proof. They claimed for fair justice and freedom.

Thursday’s court hearing concluded without summoning the eyewitnesses from both sides.

The court rule is expected within 30 days.
