On Wednesday, July 25,2023 the members of Burundi Senate voted Leonard Manirakiza as the general attorney of the Republic of Burundi. His name was submitted by the head of state, Evariste Ndayishimiye.
Manirakiza replaces Syvestre Nyandwi, 51, who had been in the position since 2016.
The attorney General of the Republic has 6 years of mandate.
Leonard Manirakiza, a Muramvya native, belongs to Hutu ethnic group. He was voted for 38/39.
According to the Burundi constitution and the agreements brokered in Arusha, the prosecutor general of the republic should belong to Hutu ethnic group.
Others 8 lawmakers were unanimously approved including 4 men and 4 women who are set to be the counsels of the supreme court.
Those approved as Supreme Court judges include BARAGENGANA Modeste, BIZIMANA Clotilde, KANEZA Clarisse, HAVYARIMANA Laurent, HOBONIMANA Josiane, NTUKAMAZINA Thomas, NKUNDWANIMANA Alexis and NSHIMIRIMANA Déo.
This move comes after the president’s groans over the sector of justice in Burundi due to its dissatisfactory. He recently launched a nationwide plan to implement all filed lawsuits which haven’t yet put into practice.
Ndayishimiye also has publicly criticised several judges of blockades to the justice as they do not help him in fight against corruption.
The newly voted prosecutor general of the republic was among judges in hearing of Melchior Ndadaye, the first president democratically elected in 1993 who was assassinated after 3 months on power.
He was in charge of various services in supreme court.
